Safe and affordable housing is under attack in Michigan. The legislature is considering a number of bills that would raise rent and housing prices, while creating unsafe communities for renters. Just a couple of the egregious examples under consideration today:
- House Bill 4878 would prevent landlords from stopping people who have committed crimes like murder and assault from living in apartment and senior communities.
- House Bill 4947 would permit rent control across Michigan, an idea that has caused skyrocketing housing costs, lower quality rentals, and housing shortages leading to homelessness in cities like San Fransisco and New York.
Together, the series of bills will cause fewer apartments and homes to be built in Michigan, and less money invested in maintaining high-quality apartments for renters. With less supply, Michiganders will see their rents and monthly payments rise.
